Cool Cities Grant Application Video - City of Wayland
The idea behind this grant application was to get the City of Wayland a $100,000 initial grant to work with Hopkins Township, Wayland Township and MDOT to till the soil and plant wildflowers in the MDOT ROW along US-131 from 1/2 north of the Wayland offramp to 1/2 mile south of the Bradley/Hopkins offramp. The State said this request did NOT fit their pattern of being a core community - a city/urban core that they wanted to be cool I guess Wayland is just to rural to be a cool city as far as the State is concerned. This could and still should be done.
Family Entertainment Farm
The Family Entertainment Farm portion of Plank Road Farms was originally proposed on the West side of US-131 in Hopkins Township. After suggesting that owner of the property NOT put forth a Commercial P.U.D. proposal, the Township suggested that the owner wait for an ordinance (Highway Frontage Overlay) be applied to the property along 12th Street. A dynamic, yet well controlled overlay district and document was developed by the Hopkins Township's Planner at the time, only to have the planning commission vote down even the creation of the overlay ordinance, let alone the development of this project itself. It would appear that these uses would be approved in Wayland Township on the East side of US-131, in conjunction with the Race Track, and other development. In fact, the outdoor amphitheatre and event facility would probably be included in Phase I of Plank Road Farms as their is a huge demand for large outdoor concert venues during 6 - 8 months of the year.

Historical Farm Redevelopment
The Barone Park of the late 1800's included one of the top residential farm homes in the country, and a dirt race track for both Horse Racing and Bicycle Racing. It was located on the first farm north of the Casino proposed for the Bradley Offramp 1/2 way between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids on US-131. The proposed Casino site was once home to the Plank Road Farms regional theme park and farm educational event facility which closed in 1978. The Casino is awaiting what most supporters believe to be imminent approval.
The hope is to build an the Western Michigan State Fairgrounds, including, but not limited Automotive Race Track, Horse Track, Outdoor Adventure Retailer, Indoor WaterPark Hotel, Farmer's Museum, Petting Zoo, Hospitality Education facility, Farmland Development Rights, TIFA District, Multi-governmental development authority with an Ethanol Plant, Methanol Plant, Solar and Wind generation facility all on the Plank Road Farm (Old US-131 between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids). The goal would be to promote the the State of Michigan and it's "Cruise Michigan" campaign, Agri-tourism, Agricultural Research, Sustainability, Motorsports and Alternative Energy. Everything would be connected by an authentic
